Galle 2007 Flood Appeal
The unusually heavy Torrential rains which have arrived with the beginning of the South West monsoon has resulted in widespread damage and destruction in three of the southern states of Sri Lanka.
Galle district was badly affected in flood prone areas with 7 people losing their lives and over 20,000 people being affected by flooding and landslides, the rural nature of the district has meant that assistance for affected communities has been slower to arrive.
The Badly affected areas in Galle mainly being the rice paddy and vegetable-growing areas of the district have resulted in millions of rupees of lost revenue and food products for the local farmers as well.
Rainforest Rescue International which has been based in Galle since 2002 and is engaged in social and environmental projects in the area, has initiated localized food distribution in the affected area and is requesting donations to assist the re establishment of affected families.
The Immediate needs of the people are clean water, food and replacement non-food items such as cooking sets.
Rainforest Rescue International Flood appeal aims to raise 50,000 USD for the relief of families in the Galle district.
